Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” So Samuel took a horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power. 1 Samuel 16:12-13

From the time of Moses and David, God has chosen individuals to shepherd his people and ordained them for this purpose. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, PCUSA has faithfully followed this example, electing and ordaining members of the congregation as Elders.

When I was ordained at Nazareth, during the service I felt enveloped by the Holy Spirit in the press of the other Elders surrounding and touching me. During subsequent years, I experienced a similar feeling when I was one of those laying on hands. The sense of peace and unity provided at those occasions is almost magical in its power.

Prayer:
Almighty and eternal God, our goal is to truly be your disciples but we are weak. Our minds cloud, our resolve fades and we slide back into old patterns. Send your Holy Spirit to strengthen and enlighten us so that we may fully participate in the work that you are doing at this time and in this place. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
